Edifier R1280T vs Edifier R1280DB: Which One is Best?

The R1280T and R1280DB speaker systems by Edifier are bookshelf speakers that work great in an office, dorm room, living room, or apartment. They are intended to be stylish and functional but not obtrusive. What’s the difference, you ask? We get that a lot, so we wanted to settle once and for all the winner of Edifier R1280T vs Edifier R1280DB. Let’s go!

Regarding the target market for these speakers, they work for just about anyone who wants affordable room-filling sound but where space is at a premium. Each of these models has a very small footprint (5.7 inches across the front, 7 inches deep, and only 9.5 inches high), and despite the small size, their depth provides plenty of bass tones beyond their small size.

They look identical, so you may ask what is the difference between them and which is the better deal? Here, we will break down the facets of each speaker and provide our recommendations for the best pick.

Breaking It Down: Edifier R1280T vs Edifier R1280DB

We will review several aspects of each model speaker as sold: Design, accessories, utility, and, most importantly, sound quality. We will consider the elements of sound quality (tonality, bass tones, mid-range tones, and trebles) and give you our overall opinions on each speaker, plus our final recommendation. Let’s get to it!

Edifier R1280T Bookshelf Speakers

The Edifier R1280T is a set of bookshelf speakers (about the size of a bread loaf) with a classic appearance. The side panels are a maple-stained wood that appears oak and imparts warmth and weight to the speakers.

The front panel cover is gray cloth over a mesh screen with the word Edifier at the bottom and a mid-transverse fess of dull silvered metal. The speakers (woofer, tweeter, and bass vent) all face the front and have a recessed control module on the side for bass, treble, and volume.

Specifications: Measuring The Goods in Edifier R1280T vs Edifier R1280DB

Dimensions: 5.7×9.5×7 inches; wood (maple stain) and metal

Amplifier power: 42 W RMS (root mean square)
Case: Bass-reflex
Drivers (each speaker): Woofer (4.17-inch), dome tweeter (0.51-inch)
Frequency response: 75 Hz to 18 kHz
Ports: All front
Wired connections: RCA (2), spring clip pair I/O (2)
Signal-to-noise ratio: 85 dBA
Input sensitivity: 750 mV
Wireless connections: wireless remote
On-board: Adjustments for bass, treble, and volume

Design

The design of the R1280T is nearly identical to the new model, R1280DB (see below). Both speakers use the same case, wood, and metal components (except the R1280DB is also available in a black wood stain for that modern look).

The wood side panels come with a maple stain on genuine wood that is likely oak. The speakers have a rich, warm quality to their appearance due to the wood side panels and look like a piece of furniture.

Apart from the IR remote control, the left side panel has a recessed box with knobs for bass, treble, and volume for direct control. The control knobs are not cheaply made but operate smoothly and have some weight, allowing for fine adjustments to settings.

A power switch and spring I/O connectors at the speakers’ rear are intended to slave the left speaker to the right main. For aesthetic purposes, the front fabric clips to the speaker’s face mostly cover the woofer, tweeter, and bass port. The speakers can be operated without this cover (some users claim a subtle improvement in sound quality without them).

Accessories

The R1280T comes with a speaker connection cable (8.2 feet), an RCA-RCA cable (5.5 feet), an RCA audio cable (5.5 feet), a remote control, and a user manual.

Utility

The R1280T has standard RCA jack L/R inputs for two different sources of sound, one labeled PC and the other Aux (auxiliary). Control of the speakers is simple and direct by adjustment of the side knobs, or they can be controlled by the provided IR remote. The remote for the R1280T is very basic and has three buttons: volume up, volume down, and mute.

Sound Quality

Tonality: General sound quality is warm on the frequency low-end, and the treble is a bit crisp. These combined effects can fill a normal-sized living room despite furniture, books, and other sound-absorbing materials.

However, the proper placement is important to get the most out of these speakers since they are small.

Bass: If arranged towards the audience at or slightly above the listening level, the bass is deep and voluminous, especially in the mid-range of the bass, and blends well into the mid-tone sound region. These tonal highlights are appropriate for background music during parties and movie viewing.

Mid: You will not feel any bass kick or thump from these speakers, but the mid-range tonal richness will give you the perception of tonal depth and makes listening quite enjoyable.

Treble: Timbre in vocal ranges is good but falls out in the middle of the voice range. Most small speakers fail in the high-tone category, but the R1280T and R1280DB use a 0.51-inch silk dome tweeter that provides sharp and clear high tones that are crisp and undistorted but not too bright.

Edifier R1280DB Bookshelf Speakers

At first glance, the R1280DB looks like the R1280T speakers (in maple); they are the same in most respects. Performance for each model is nearly the same, they share the same cabinet and most of the same electronics.

That latter point is where the two models diverge, however. The R1280DB is an electronically upgraded R1280T with more input and remote-control features. It has the same build and nearly identical sound quality but has been made more amenable to modern sound systems and smart electronics.

The R1280DB has Bluetooth communication and optical and coaxial inputs, plus a remote that will allow you to control all these from across the room. It is also available in a modern-looking black stain for the wood side panels that would fit well in a modern-styled living room.

Specifications: Measuring The Goods in Edifier R1280T vs Edifier R1280DB

Dimensions: 5.7×9.5×7 inches; wood (choice of maple or black stain) and metal
Amplifier power: 42 W RMS (root mean square)
Case: Bass-reflex
Drivers (each speaker): Woofer (4.57-inch), dome tweeter (0.51-inch)
Frequency response: 55 Hz to 20 kHz
Ports: All front
Wired connections: Optical TOSLINK (1), digital coaxial (1), RCA (2), spring clip pair I/O (2)
Signal-to-noise ratio: 85 dBA
Input sensitivity: 550 mV
Wireless connections: Bluetooth, remote control

Design

The wood side panels come in either a black or maple stain and have a beautiful appearance that complements any decor. These speakers have a decidedly classic, almost retro, stereo hi-fi feel like their counterparts above.

Accessories

The R1280DB comes with a speaker connection cable (8.2 feet), an RCA-RCA cable (5.5 feet), an RCA audio cable (5.5 feet), a fiber optic cable (5 feet), a remote control, and a user manual. The quality of these cables is very basic but does highlight the breadth of inputs these speakers can accommodate.

However, we recommend you replace the cabling with higher-quality products at your first opportunity.

Utility

Here is where the R1280DB is distinctly different from the R1280T in terms of connectivity. The R1280DB is an up-ported R1280T with Bluetooth connectivity that permits wireless streaming from a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Speaker electronics have a pairing mode that remembers recently-used devices, so later Bluetooth link-up is easy after the first time. In addition, these speakers have an internal DAC which accepts optical input and can pair up with smart TVs to serve as a sound system for movie and music video viewing.

The R1280DB has standard RCA jack L/R inputs for two different sources of sound, one labeled Line 1 and the other Line 2. Like the R1280T, the left speaker is slaved to the right main speaker through speaker connection cables.

There are two additional inputs: one for optical cabling and a coaxial connector. Control of the speakers is simple and direct by adjustment of the side knobs, or they can be controlled by the provided IR remote.

The remote for the R1280DB is more complicated than the R1280T and has 12 buttons for volume control and switching between various inputs: power, volume up, volume down, mute, Line 1, Line 2, Opt (optical), Cox (coaxial). In addition to these controls, there is a Bluetooth on/connect/pairing button and program forward, back, and play/stop buttons to remotely control a paired Bluetooth device such as a cell phone or MP3/4 player.

Sound Quality

The sound quality in all aspects is identical to the R1280T discussed above. Both speaker systems share the same cabinet design and are identically sized.

There is a small difference between the two models in that the woofer of the R1280DB is slightly larger (0.4 inches). This is enough to provide a bit deeper bass but still not a kick or thump

Winner of Edifier R1280T vs Edifier R1280DB: Edifier R1280DB

Although both speakers are fine, well-crafted audio electronics, there is no contest regarding our favorite. Since the price point difference between the two models is so close, and the electronic options you get with the R1280DB are so numerous, it is simply a no-brainer to choose the Edifier R1280DB model.

3. Pioneer Elite SP-EC73- The Best Floor Stander

Pioneer Elite SP-EC73 features circular bass drivers for a consistent sound signature. It comes in a small and refined cabinet for easy integration with other equipment. A unique feature in Elite SP-EC73 is the passive radiator that improves bass impact for the most commanding voices and sound effects. This beauty is one of the best in its category.

Pioneer Elite SP-EC73 Key Highlights

  • The Marvelous Concentric Driver: The coherent source transducer (CST) is the heart of this center speaker. This is because the interference between the 1” tweeter placed at the center and midrange is dramatically reduced by the driver.
  • Attention to Details:  SP-EC73 details cut across from gold-plated connector to complex crossovers. From the floor-standing cabinet to the center speaker itself, its design is slightly curved on the sides to reduce standing waves experienced with other designs. The aforementioned CST driver is placed in its own compartment to isolate it from pressure waves in the main cabinet. Things to Consider When Buying Center Speakers

Budget

Generally, most center channel speakers are affordable. However, quality calls for commitment. Budgeting the right amount of money is essential before you make the purchase decision. The prices will vary depending on the brand and also the retailer. We want you to get the best sound possible on your budget.

Performance and Sound Quality

When choosing a center speaker, go for one with a wide frequency range. A wide range not only provides crystal clear sound to people that are at the center of the listening position but also to people that are not facing the speaker directly.

Size and Style

The size and style of your center speaker should match that of your other surround sound speakers. You should try to look for similar mid-range and same frequency responses. This is important as it will provide a seamless transfer of sound from one speaker to the other.

Power Requirement

The amount of power required will depend on the size of the speaker setup as well as the quality of the system. Measured in ohms and decibels, a good center channel speaker will use the same amount of power as normal stereo speakers. So, make sure you factor in power requirements before you make the purchase.

Sensitivity

Center speakers with a high sensitivity rating naturally reproduce quality surround sound with less static noise. In addition, they consume less power as compared with the ones with a lower sensitivity. It makes sense, then, that the speaker’s sensitivity should be a major consideration for quality sound and saving power.

Usage

Whether it’s for gaming, playing music, or watching movies, single one out the center channel speaker that best serves your purpose.

Answer: There are instances when installing a center channel speaker is a necessity rather than a luxury. For instance, if your system is set up in a large room such that speakers are spread apart, you will need a high-quality center channel speaker to eliminate holes in your sound. Without the speaker, you will notice some weakness in your center sound. Dialogue in your movies will sound fuzzy, and you will feel that something vital is lacking in your system’s audio output.

Q. What is the difference between a center channel speaker and a soundbar?

Answer: A center channel speaker functions as part of a bigger sound system. It works with right, left, center, and surround speakers to enhance your listening experience. Essentially, it is the heart of a home theater system. Most center channel speakers need an external amp or AV receiver.

On the other hand, a soundbar is a standalone speaker. The main aim of installing a soundbar is to improve the quality of your TV set. It works perfectly well without a power amp or AV receiver. You just need to connect it to the TV set.

Q. What are the most important things to look for in a center channel speaker?

Answer: A broad frequency response is the most essential feature in a center channel speaker. Make sure that the speaker can adequately reproduce vocals. Other considerations are the size, design, and look of the speaker.

Q. How does a center channel speaker improve the movie experience?

Answer: If you love watching movies at home, you absolutely need to add a center channel speaker to your sound system. The speaker changes everything. It reproduces all dialogue, movie effects, and musical instruments more robustly and clearly to give you a better overall sound output.

Q. How high should a center channel speaker be?

Answer: The ideal placement for a center channel speaker is directly on-axis relative to the primary sitting position. Since the speaker balances the left and right speakers, placing it at a matching height makes sense. This height translates into at or near head level when seated. At this height, the center channel speaker will improve mid and high-frequency response and dialogue intelligibility.

Q. How do I check whether the center channel speaker is compatible with my home theater system?

Answer: Consider the brand of your right and left front speakers. Different brands have specific sound signatures, so you want a center channel speaker that will integrate with the existing speakers. Choosing the same manufacturer for the center channel speaker as for other speakers in the system is the best shot at achieving high compatibility. With the same manufacturer, you are assured of a smooth transition.

It’s noteworthy that some center channel speakers are quite versatile and will blend with other types of speakers just fine. Just be aware of this factor when making your purchase decision.

The Bottom Line

The center channel speaker is an audio speaker that enhances your sound at home, whether you are enjoying your favorite TV show, watching a movie, or playing music. It is normally positioned at the center of the action. Its varied technologies make it possible to produce a natural and balanced sound that will add to your home theater experience.

Factors to Consider Before Buying the Best Computer Speakers under $50

The electronics market today has dozens of speakers designed for computers, be it laptops or desktops. Thus, it’s a bit hectic to make a choice, especially when you don’t know where to start. There’re certain things you should know about these speakers before buying one.

Here’re the key factors you need to consider before buying the best computer speakers under $50:

Size of the Speaker

Speakers come in different sizes and shapes. The kind of shape to choose should depend more on your personal preference. Some have a satellite design while others are rounded, cylindrical or box-shaped. If you have limited space on your computer desk, you would rather go for satellite speakers or compact cylindrical options. In case your desk space is not an issue, you can go for larger box-shaped and rounded speakers.

Portability

In case you’re always on the move with your PC, you would want speakers that you can carry along. Thus, you should go for portable speakers for your computer. Such speakers should be lightweight such that you’ll not struggle to carry it in your bag.

Also, it should be compact and small in size to fit in your travel bag without the need to get an extra, special bag for it. When it comes to portability, the source of power matters a lot. Thus, you should consider a type powered by USB. This way, you’ll simply power it with your laptop or even a power bank. This way, you can use it just anywhere.

Types of Input

Different devices have different types of inputs. While most computers have a standard 3.5mm jack for plugging these speakers, you might want to attach them to other devices.

For instance, you may want to use them with your gaming console, TV or DVD. Thus, ensure it has inputs such as 3.5mm and RCA. If you like using headphones, then consider speakers that have a 3.5mm port to plug in your headset.

Choosing a type with more inputs will allow you to connect unlimited types of devices.

Control Buttons

It’s always great to have a device that gives you the freedom to control it as you like. For instance, you should choose a type that has volume control. This way, you’ll not have to rely on the computer volume controls. Sometimes, software misbehaves and it’ll help to control the volume from the speaker itself. Also, you would want to control the bass and tone. Thus, consider a type with a bass button especially when bass matters a lot to you.

Number of Channels

Speakers that can be attached to PCs come in different channels. Some have a single channel while others have 2.0 and 2.1 channels. Here, your preference should depend on the kind of sound you want.

In case you just want to listen to basic dialogue and conversations, a 1.0 or 2.0 channel will suffice. In case you want to listen to music or watch movies without much emphasis on bass, a 2.0 channel will also work for you. A single channel option comes with a single speaker while a 2.0 channel option features two speakers.

However, if you love watching movies and listening to music with more bass, or you love gaming, then you should consider a 2.1 channel option. A 2.1 channel option comes with two speakers and a subwoofer for more bass. Thus, base your choice on your sound needs.

Conclusion

Since most PCs hardly deliver high-quality and loud audio, PC speakers come in handy as an ideal solution to this problem. These speakers come in different sizes, types, and features. As you can see, they have their own benefits, shortcomings, and differences. Your choice should be based on the kind of sound you need. Thus, from these options reviewed, choose the option that has the features you need.

While cost matters, never choose based on cost alone. The cheapest option is not always the best and similarly, the most expensive option doesn’t mean it’s the best. Although your budget will surely have an impact on your choice, remember quality comes first.

Pyle Speakers Review – A 2023 Deep Dive

Pyle speakers are a Bluetooth audio device small enough to be carried around on your person, making high-quality sounds available to you wherever you go and it is compatible with whatever device you choose.

Although there are many on the market, the Pyle speaker stands out thanks to its unique construction, using specially engineered ABS, this speaker keeps itself far lighter than competing models while not sacrificing any size or decibel power.

Like most speakers in its class, the Pyle can accept a number of different audio feeds, which means you are assured that you can play on it no matter what device or storage you happen to use for your music.

On one end of the speaker, you’ll find a micro-USB port, 3.5mm AUX port, and MicroSD card reader; there is also a full USB input, as the micro-USB input is the power supply as well.

The idea of a universal audio solution is carried farther in the number of platforms supported. This machine is compatible to play with Android, iOS, and Windows alike as long as the device in question has a Bluetooth receiver.

You don’t even need to be particularly close by for it to work; the Pyle has a respectable range of over 30ft, and there is a control pad next to the various outlets to let you manipulate playlists without needing to go to your computer each time.

With the assorted list of different systems and connections, it’s worth noting that there are few, if any, file formats that are beyond this speaker’s capabilities.

As long as it can be sent by Bluetooth 2.1, this speaker should be able to run any audio with ease. It plays MP3 and MP4, WAV, and more without a hitch, and is extremely friendly to audio from videos or games you happen to be playing on the paired device.

Portability is always a big factor when it comes to speakers. The Pyle speaker has two carry options: an over-the-shoulder strap and a grab handle along the top. Both are resistant to the typical wear and tear of being carried, swung, and packed around for extended periods of time, so you can grab these and move without breaking stride.

Naturally, it’s not all about how many different ways there are to grab it; this speaker is also light and compact enough to be realistically moved around with most packs that you choose to use. It is less than a foot in every direction and weighs less than 3lbs, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking for a small audio solution they can keep on hand wherever they go.

Factors that contribute to it being lightweight and durable is due to the incorporation of newer ABS polymers used in speakers. This material makes the speakers lighter and more flexible than traditional plastics in the same shape. This makes the speaker more resistant to damage and easier to carry but can mean that screws or internal components come out quicker than in other models.

Who’s It For?

This speaker is intended to be for anyone who wants good audio on the go, whether in their hotel room, at school, on transit, or anywhere else where you can take a Bluetooth device. Its battery makes it long-lasting enough that you can, at least in theory, use it as a permanent audio fixture as well, and the price tag makes it a great alternative if you are shopping on a budget.

This is not the speaker to choose for a comprehensive audio system or even basic surround sound stereo. The small size and portability make the sound perpetually unidirectional, undermining any chance of producing an immersive audio experience for gaming or theater.

It is also not advised for anyone likely to be playing lengthy clips. The battery can outpace its charge rate, making this speaker unsuitable for anything that would require other speakers to be plugged in.

What We Like About the Pyle Speaker

This speaker is definitely the portable audio solution that it is designed to be; it is small, light, and can blast music anywhere you go, on any device. The Bluetooth is a pretty early version, making it compatible with most devices today, and it has a 30ft range and integrated control pad that makes it a simple matter to play what you want at the touch of a button.

There are plenty of options for everything about this speaker – input, file format, carrying, and controls. It has a durable and lightweight body and a battery life of several hours before you need to start looking for a plug – enough juice to take on cookouts and pool parties without worrying about the fun grinding to a halt as the battery dies.

What We Don’t Like About the Pyle Speaker

Although there are many promises as to what this speaker can deliver, the user experience doesn’t totally live up to the hype. Pairing with Bluetooth, for example, can be problematic; most mobile devices or laptops use a more advanced Bluetooth 4.0 and above, making it difficult to properly pair with this speaker.

Sound quality is another subject of concern; it is safe to assume that this speaker will see frequent outdoor use, and many buyers report that the sound quality and pairing range will diminish if the weather is inhospitable. There are also reports of it failing to pair completely when outdoors, with the speakers only producing the bass or high notes in an unusable and sometimes unpleasant experience.

Although it does protect the speaker from other damages, the flexible casing can make the screws and internal components work themselves loose if put through excessive rough usage. This kind of damage is more likely to be permanent and is almost always harder to fix, leading to many users wondering if the added drop protection is really worth the trade-off.

PROS

  • Highly durable casing
  • Variety of physical connections
  • Universal wireless connectivity
  • Respectable range from device
  • Tough carry handle

CONS

  • Sound quality drops in inclement weather
  • Lacks the waterproofing common in the competition

What’s In The Box?

Apart from the speaker itself, this product ships with two highly versatile cables, one for the AUX port and one for the micro-USB port. These cables are both fully transferable to other devices, making them of considerable use for countless other devices that use the same port systems.

Not included are any of the other cables, or a shoulder strap to attach to the clips intended for that purpose. There is also no SD card of any kind or an instruction manual, both useful to have with your portable speaker; even a clearer guide on how to pair the device to another Bluetooth transponder would have been of considerable assistance when first putting this into use.

One more thing that is missing from this speaker is a belt or arm strap of some kind. As a device that will be carried around a fair amount, there is significant value in an easy way to attach it to yourself as you move around, and a clip for a bag or belt would not go amiss.

Overview of Features

Physically speaking, this device weighs in at 2.86 lbs, making it a breeze to grab and go. The outside dimensions, exclusive of the toughened rubber carrying handle, are 6 x 6.5 x 11.5 inches, which allows the speaker to fit into most backpacks or satchels without using up all the weight or space that item is capable of supporting.

One perpetual problem in this speaker is that it is round which affects its stability. Most luggage has at least some kind of flat bottom, and a rounded and rigid hull can be exceptionally problematic when trying to pack a bag.

In terms of ports, there are three different options for input; you can use an ordinary USB connection, a 3.5mm AUX cord, or insert a micro-SD card to eliminate the need for any external connection. The micro-USB port is for charging only, and will not transfer files.

This device’s Bluetooth transponder is from the days of Bluetooth 2.1, but still has the proven ability to tether a device to this speaker from nearly 30 yards away. While this is doubtlessly convenient, it is a feature that multiple users have reported as getting worse the farther they are from the speaker itself.

Along with all the custom media options that you could go for, this speaker also includes an FM radio antenna for less structured programming. With a modicum of effort, it is possible to adjust the settings on your speaker to make this speaker receive that as a default, effectively giving you a music source that doesn’t need any external media to make a scene.

Whether you choose hardwired or wireless for your next jam session, the speaker lets you control the playlist without ever touching your media device. There is an integrated control pad on the side of the speakers that allows full manipulation of the playlist with no need to access the paired device, making it useful for parties, poolside adventures, and cramped car rides where it might be inconvenient to dig your phone out of the bag.

The speaker’s omnidirectional rating is 20 kHz, which is fine when played outdoors but the sound quality can deteriorate quickly around a corner or from inside a crevasse or rock pile. Although it does have speakers pointed in every direction, calling it true surround sound would be a misnomer. The size and portability of this speaker prevent it from being put to gainful use as a real surround sound system.

One thing that a lot of competing models have that this speaker lacks is any level of waterproofing, even on the lower end of the IP scale. This means that your speaker will be vulnerable to even mild or accidental damage, requiring extra care should any mishap befall it.

Other than that, though, the exterior is actually considerably tougher than some models, particularly against any human-error damage it may sustain; the chassis is tough enough to ward off most casual damage and pliant enough not to smash when the speaker gets its first hard jolt.

As a wireless device, one of the most important things about this speaker will be its battery life and charging rates. The speaker gets close to 6 hours of normal use or 3 hours of high demand on a single charge, with the charging itself taking close to 5 hours from 0% to 100%.

Review Summary

This can be a great companion for anyone whose mobile speakers will not cut it for their daily usage or those who want a low-cost gaming setup with some good quality sound. Although it is a great way to get the energy going at parties, its portable nature puts it at risk of being knocked over or spilled on in the high-activity atmosphere, either of which could cause irreparable damage.

The manufacturers did an excellent job of making this a truly universal audio solution. It has most of the ports in use in mainstream devices, and pairs seamlessly by universal Bluetooth connection with any operating system or platform. The only two things missing are Apple cable ports and a way to connect this device to the WiFi in a smart home to make it useable from anything hooked up to the home’s network.

There are many seriously concerning reports that this speaker either does not recharge properly after the first time or only projects on one scale, creating unusably high or low sound instead of ordinary balanced tones. While a few defects are to be expected in most products, there are too many in this for it to be purely coincidental; buyers should thoroughly inspect and test the speakers as soon as possible and seek a refund or exchange promptly if there are any signs of trouble.

Things to Consider Before Buying Speakers for Vinyl

While there’re many great speaker options to choose from for your vinyl record player, not all of them are made equal. Some speakers outshine others in certain features; that’s why it’s important to know what to look out for when shopping for vinyl speakers. With that said, here’re the things to consider before buying the best speakers for vinyl.

1. Inbuilt Amplifier

When setting up your turntable with an audio system, you would want the easiest connection option possible. The easiest connection to set up is the one that uses the least number of audio components. Using minimal audio components makes it possible to set up a sound system with your turntable, even in the smallest space. You also save more money when using fewer components. As such, it’s ideal to consider a speaker that has an inbuilt amplifier. This means that you’ll not have to invest in a separate amplifier to power the speaker system. You’ll simply attach your turntable directly to the active speaker and enjoy your favorite vintage records. Such a sound setup is easy to work with and will obviously cost you less of your money.

2. Woofer and Tweeters

It’s always more enjoyable to listen to music with a sound system that delivers full-range sound. This means that you should invest in a speaker that delivers low, midrange, and high frequencies. This is most important for audiophiles. Thus, consider a speaker that comes with a woofer or a sub for lows and mid and tweeters for highs. The woofer and tweeters should be powerful enough for the kind of lows and highs you want. This way, you’ll enjoy all the details in your music records.

3. Sound Control Options

It’s always best when you have more control over a sound system. Thus, the best speaker system to go for is one that has some sound controls. For instance, a speaker that allows you to control the volume means that you can easily turn the volume up or down as you like without having to reach out to the turntable. If it has more sound control options, you’ll find it more useful. If the control options are limited, then you may have to invest in an equalizer for more control of the sound.

4. Types of Inputs and Outputs

Different speakers have different types of inputs. Some have more inputs than others. The best option should be the one that has the type of input which is compatible with your music player. For instance, if you want to attach your turntable, go for a speaker that has compatible inputs. For more versatility, consider a speaker that can be hooked with different types of music devices, just in case you would want to connect a different device along the way. Also, you should consider the types of outputs that the speaker has. This is to enable you to hook the speaker to other components, such as headphones and subwoofers.

5. Size of the Speaker

While size does not determine the performance of a speaker, it matters when it comes to portability and space. If you’re limited in terms of space, you should consider a more compact speaker. For instance, if you would want to use the speaker on a desktop space, then you should definitely go for a more compact speaker. Also, if you’ll be moving the speaker from one place to another regularly, then consider a portable speaker. However, if you’re not limited in space, and portability is not a concern, then size may not be a big issue.

Final Verdict

Turntables are a great way of reminding oneself of where music has come from. While digital music is the norm today, there is a growing move back to classic vinyl. Here at Speaker Champion, we’re all for it! With this review and buying guide in mind, you’ll surely make a more informed decision when looking for a speaker for your vinyl.

A Deep Dive into R1280DB Speakers by Edifier

The R1280DB Speakers are a small set of bookshelf speakers (about the size of a loaf of bread) produced by Edifier. They are intended for small spaces where space is at a premium.

These genuine wood-sided speakers are available in maple or black stain and support various input options. In addition, they can be controlled remotely with the provided IR remote control pad.

Edifier was started in 1996 in Beijing by a small group of audiophiles who wanted to make beautiful and powerful speakers of all sizes. Currently, Edifier exports to 70 different countries, enjoys a broad following and has received several awards for design excellence; and even has a speaker line designed by audio engineer Phil Jones of Acoustic Energy in the UK.

Who’s It For?

R1280DBs are an ideal solution for an affordable but effective sound system for apartments, offices, dorm rooms, and standard living rooms. These small speakers easily fit on a regular bookshelf yet produces a rich sound that belies their small size.

A set of R1280s will only set you back about $120-130 dollars (or less, if you can find a sale) and can be fully integrated into any current audio output source through wired or Bluetooth connections.

Set up of the R1280DB is easy as there is a simple on-off switch in the rear of the right speaker (you can also use the remote control).

The left speaker has slaved to the right speaker, which houses the power supply, and also has manual control knobs on the side for easy access. However, if you are looking for a stereo system with some bass kick, these are not the speakers for you.

They have some really good mid-tone and upper-bass range sound (see below for details), but hardcore audiophiles will likely pass on these speakers.

What We Like About the Edifier R1280DB Speakers

Edifier R1280DB speakers have a great sound for a small set of bookshelf speakers. The tonal quality is rich enough in the midrange that listening is enjoyable. We also appreciate the ease of use with respect to connectivity.

Bluetooth connectivity, remote control, and device pairing memory features are a big bonus and make these speakers usable for easy listening and movie viewing.

What We Don’t Like About the R1280DB Speakers

We would really like to see the R1280DB speakers equipped with better-quality accessories. We are not talking about the remote control here, but the cabling.

The cabling provided is the most basic you can get and not very good quality. However, we realize that the R1280DB speakers are Edifier’s Bluetooth-enabled budget speakers, so that is keeping in line with the affordability objective.

What’s Included?

Basic quality connection cables are provided with the R1280DB speakers. These include a

A set of basic quality connection cables is provided with the R1280DB. These include a speaker connection cable to link the left speaker to the right (the right has the power supply and amplifier; 8.2-foot cable), an RCA-RCA cable with L/R jacks on each end (5.5 feet long), an standard RCA audio cable (5.5 feet long), and a fiber optic cable that is good for smart TVs and some stereo systems (5 feet long).

There is also an instruction manual, which is helpful for understanding how to pair the speakers to a Bluetooth device properly, a full IR remote control that can switch between any input source, control a Bluetooth device, and of course, control volume, mute, and switch the whole thing off.

Design
We would just like to start by saying that these speakers look great. Whether you choose the retro look with the maple stain or do with the modern-looking black stain, the use of real wood (we think it’s probably oak) in an affordable set of speakers is a huge bonus.

The R1280DB speakers basically look like pieces of furniture and will absolutely be a tasteful addition to any space. The choice to use real wood on small speakers that are marketed as a budget system is a really nice touch, as the wood provides an aesthetic warmth to the surroundings.

If you are going to use small speakers because you do not have the room, there is no reason that they cannot look nice. Edifier has really hit the mark on looks, but how do they sound? (more on that below).

The case design of the R1280DB is identical to its predecessor, the R1280T speaker set, which is regarded by many as a very nice, very well-made, and affordable bookshelf speaker. The R1280DB excels where their predecessor did not in being able to accommodate all current audio input sources.

The cloth facing is made of grey cloth and slightly domed over a mesh screen to protect the speakers from dust or casual contact. At the bottom of the screen is the word Edifier in silvered metal and there is a mid-face fess of the same metal that falls short of traversing the face.

On the right speaker, there is a small receiving window for the IR remote control. and is usually not seen unless the cloth facing has been removed. On the side of the right speaker is also a recessed control panel of bass, treble, and volume knobs.

These knobs have a bit of weight to them, do not feel cheap, and can be turned in small amounts, and tend to stay where they are set. All power, input, and I/O connectors are located on the rear of the right speaker (except for a sole I/O connector on the left speaker).

Utility
For a bookshelf speaker set, the R1280DB comes with a wealth of features that permit it to be connected to any current audio device. These speakers can also be connected to smart TVs through the optical fiber connection port; this port can also be used with high-end stereo systems for an extra bit of input signal breadth.

Apart from coaxial, optical, and standard RCA jack inputs, the R1280DB speakers are also Bluetooth-capable. This permits them to be connected wirelessly to any smartphone, MP3/4 player, laptop, or tablet and makes them compatible with all modern means of wirelessly transmitting audio information except WiFi.

Bluetooth device pairing for some electronic devices can be a real pain and more like a game of wireless tag. In Bluetooth mode, the device pairing of these speakers is effortless and the electronics of the R1280DB speakers will also remember all recent Bluetooth connected devices.

Essentially, after the first go you just need to set your laptop or smartphone to Bluetooth transmit, use the R1280DB’s remote to switch over to Bluetooth, and in a few moments, your audio playlist or music video is blasting through the speakers. This also makes setup for movie viewing a cinch if you are using a portable device or a Bluetooth-enabled television.

Regarding more traditional input methods, the R1280DB speakers have regular RCA jacks with L/R inputs and can accommodate two sound sources (LINE1 and LINE2 pair or L/R RCA sockets). The free-pair spring connector on the rear of the right speaker is how the left is linked up via the speaker connection cable.

The R1280DB speaker remote control is an IR unit that has 12 buttons. Apart from the basics like on-off, volume up, volume down, and mute, the remote allows the user to switch between audio source inputs.

In fact, it is the only way to switch between audio sources, since there are no manual controls for these sources on the speakers. The remote features buttons for LINE1, LINE2 (two different RCA-connected sources), OPT (optical fiber), COX (coaxial cable), and Bluetooth.

In the Bluetooth area of the remote, there are play-stop, program back, and program forward buttons to enable the user to move around linearly through a playlist, a set of pre-programmed radio stations, or through chapters in a movie DVD or BlueRay disc.

Sound Quality
This is where the rubber meets the road, as they say. They also say looks aren’t everything and the R1280DB’s look pretty nice.

So, how do these little beauties sound? Surprisingly good for a small set of speakers.

Tonality:
The tone of the R1280DB speakers has a smooth and warm low-end with some crisp treble up at the top. For a small set of speakers, the sound feels large and can easily fill a standard room with normal acoustic properties. There is surprising clarity in the sound for near-field listening.

With correct placement (either at or slightly above listening level), the speakers produce voluminous mid-bass that blends well into the natural sound midrange for most music and movie tracks. The treble is distinct and clear in the mid- to upper-treble range, but falls off in the lower treble registers.

The overall sound quality is most appropriate for background music (passive listening) and as a video sound system since the speakers do not demonstrate any fatigue with long-term playtimes.

Bass: The mid-bass range of the R1280DB speakers is warm, focused, and not fuzzy. It blends well into the mid-range, which is the bulk of the audible perception sound space for people.

However, if you are looking for a big bass kicker or something with a sub-bass thump, forget about it. That quality is a matter of bass cavity volume and woofer size, which are small in the R1280DB’s.

Nonetheless, the R1280DB speakers have a warmth and richness to their mid-bass zone with good note articulation and a lack of blur. Keep in mind that speaker placement for bass presentation can be critical, so try to place these speakers against an outer wall or in a corner for more acoustic focus.

On the bottom of the mid-bass, they are capable of some bang but no rumble. Higher up in the mid-bass, the speakers are punchy and responsive which tends to be perceived as room-filling in the bass range for most listeners.

Mid-range: Mid-range audio is a strong suit of Edifier and they tend to focus on that audio range in most of their small speaker products. It is simply a range where most listeners keep their attention focused.

The lower part of the mid-range is a little elevated and gives some full-bodied volume, yet the center mid-range is flat and vocal tracks tend to get a little run over here by instrumentals. Vocals are clear, however, and not thick or fuzzy.

Female vocals tend to come through clearer in the upper part of the mid-range if they make it up to the lower treble register. Despite these shortcomings, the sound is generally smooth and voicing sounds natural with a harmonic timbre.

Treble: Small, affordable speakers usually cannot hit the highs very well and is typically where they all fall short. To combat this, Edifier has chosen to use a 13 mm silk dome tweeter, which is a very agile little tweeter that produces clear, crisp, energetic tones.

The treble output of the R1280DB speakers is very detailed and not buzzy. The strategy they have employed appears to emphasize the lower-treble register by deliberately elevating it.

This sound zone is usually where most instrumental tones are played such as brass and strings and lends to a great attack, particularly with the clarity afforded to acoustic instruments. But, the R1280DB’s tend to suffer from an early roll-off in this range with a distinct loss to shimmer and airy notes.

Their background tones are clean, however, and not overly bright lending to good sound clarity. Overall, the R1280DB speakers do a good job in a small package at an affordable
